Obituary for Justus William Gromme`, Jr.

Justus William Gromme', Jr. of Dover passed away, Monday, June 15, 2020 surrounded by his three daughters. He was 92.

Mr. Gromme’ was born on December 2, 1927 in Long Beach, California to the late Justus W. Gromme’, Sr. and Constance Virginia (nee Fowler) Gromme’. Mr. Gromme’ was the oldest of three sons.

Mr. Gromme’ served in the United States Army for 24 years retiring on June 30, 1970. He enlisted in the Army in 1946 and upon completion of Boot Camp was sent to Engineer Officer Candidate School and received a commission as a Second Lieutenant at the age of 19. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers in Korea, Viet Nam, Panama Canal, Germany and various stateside locations obtaining the rank of Lt. Colonel. After his military career he worked for General Accident Insurance Company, as the West Coast Loss Control Manager for 22 years. Mr. Gromme’ was a proud member of the Masonic Fraternity, and member of Irvine Valley Lodge #671 in Lake Forest, California and Union Lodge #7 in Dover, Delaware. He was also a member El Bekal Shrine in Anaheim, California and served on the Board of Governors for the Shriners Hospital for Children - Los Angeles for nine years. He enjoyed traveling, fellowship, family, beautiful women and OYSTERS.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his father’s second wife, Marjorie Gromme’, his younger brother Robert Gromme’, first wife, Barbara, mother of his 2 oldest daughters; second wife, Constance, mother of his youngest daughter and third wife, Nancy.

Mr. Gromme’ is survived by his daughters, Julie Tindall and her husband Joseph of Dover, Linda Belcher of Smyrna, Michele Lindsey and her husband Thomas of Dover, brother Michael Gromme’ and his wife Betty of San Diego, California and a sister (Marjorie Gromme’s daughter) Neena Strichart and her husband Steve of Long Beach, California,; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 27, 2020 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Friends may visit with the family one-hour prior to the service. The internment will be at a later date at the Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, California.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Attn: Office of Development, 2900 N. Rocky Point Dr. Tampa, FL 33607 or the National Museum of the US Army, 1775 Liberty Dr., Suite 400, Ft. Belvoir, VA 22060, Attn; Memorial gifts.
