Obituary for Gerald Rudolph Odom

On Saturday, September 7, 2019, Gerald Rudolph Odom, devoted husband and father of four, passed away at age of 88 at Christiana Hospital after a five year battle with dementia.
Gerry was born August 21, 1931 in Louisville, Kentucky to Frank and Alice (Rudolph) Odom. Gerry served in the United States Army during the Korean War and spent time with the Foreign Service. After the Army, he received a degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Texas and spent the majority of his career working in advertising for Williams and Wilkins Medical Publishing. On December 23, 1963, Gerry married the love of his life, Gloria Nancy Bettelman in New York. They raised four daughters, Lisa, Brenda, Debbie and Jodi in Reisterstown, MD, where Gerry and Gloria spent the majority of their years together before retiring to Dover, DE.
Gerry enjoyed reading, mysteries and puzzles of any kind, bird watching, and traveling with his wife. He was also a Civil War history buff and he especially enjoyed visiting the battlefields in Maryland and Virginia. He had an incredible sense of humor and loved to joke and tell puns. But Gerry’s greatest love in life was his family and his devotion to his wife was apparent even in his final days. He will be dearly missed by his children and grandchildren who he taught to laugh, love, and persevere.
Gerry was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brother, Sonny. His legacy will live on through his survivors including his wife Gloria of Dover, DE; daughter Lisa and her husband Bob Ackerman of Lutherville, MD; daughter Brenda Holly and her husband John Young of Washington, DC; daughter Deborah and her husband Jay Cramer of Kingwood, WV; daughter Jodi and her husband Erick Osteen of Shenandoah Junction, WV; and his very special (and completely rotten) grandchildren, Matthew, Brittany, Rob, Jamie, Taylor and Karen.
A remembrance service will be held on Saturday, September 28th, 2019 at the Wild Meadows Club House on 529 Weaver Road in Dover, DE at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made In memory of Gerald Odom, to Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care of Delaware, 220 Continental Drive, Suite 407, Newark, DE 19713.
