Obituary for Betty P Hill

Betty P. Hill, 89, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 1, 2019, from complications of Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), a rare bone marrow disorder, which was diagnosed in November 2017.

Betty is survived by her five children and their spouses, Debbie Korbak (Michael) of Richmond VA, Joani Hardy (Tim) of Penfield NY, Jerome W. Hill Jr. (Carol) of Dover DE, Susan Barnes (Kevin) of Dover DE, Larry Hill of Sharpsburg MD, nine grandchildren and their spouses, nine great-grandchildren, a large extended family, and numerous friends.

After her children were grown, Betty worked as a secretary for the Prince George’s School District in Maryland. Upon retirement she moved to Dover to be close to two of her children where she immediately became involved in numerous volunteer activities including 25 years as a member of the Bayhealth Kent General Junior Board. Her roles included ordering baby caps for newborns, coloring books and crayons for young patients, and delivering warm cookies to patients. She especially enjoyed her time in the hospital gift shop working the register, preparing sandwiches to order, and mixing creamy milk shakes. Additionally, she coordinated fundraisers including the six dollar jewelry sale, and bake sales where she baked and sold delicious goodies. She was famous for her coconut cake, which would often sell before she even placed it on the table. She volunteered visiting patients and was a long-standing member of the Patient Advisory Council. Betty was also active in the Auxiliary of Stockley Center, the Lazarus Committee at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Meals on Wheels, mentoring elementary school students in the Capitol School District, and 15 years with Delaware Hospice. Hobbies included traveling, line dancing, painting, reading, doing puzzles, playing dominos and cards, gardening, and especially spending time with her family and friends.

Betty wished to express her deepest gratitude to all the wonderful caregivers at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital. Their care and compassion meant the world to her and her family. Their actions exemplified the meaning of the Christian teachings of caring for others, which was the foundation of all she believed. Words cannot express how much she will be missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10AM, Friday, January 11, 2019 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State Street, Dover. Friends may call one hour prior at church. Interment will be at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Delaware Hospice, delawarehospice.org.
